New Church Gallery

Project Description

An existing house nestled in the heart of Tamboerskloof Cape Town, led to the sensitive design of modernist subtraction resulting in New Church Gallery. On receiving the brief of the contemporary art Gallery, we realised the design would have to attend to the exhibitions landscape while manifesting itself with the historical pallet. The design ethos of ‘absence’ led to the intersection between the old and new, with monochrome restoration of materiality and treatment of light cutting through the spaces. Maintaining the buildings association with its context, was something we saw as paramount to the success of continuing its subtle charm.
